How to get a “Race License” with NASA
There are three paths in the Arizona Region for drivers to obtain a NASA Competition License.
Option 1 – Traditional Method
- Drivers work their way through the NASA “ladder system” starting in HPDE1 and getting signed off for each level by an Instructor or Group Leader into HPDE4 (or Time Trial)
- Attend a NASA “Competition School” (formally scheduled once a year in AZ, several other options in other regions)
Option 2 – Alternative Organization Race Experience
- Drivers who already possess a “race license” (in additional to actual race experience) with another sanctioning body may apply for a NASA License. NOTE: We would not accept someone who did “xyz” race school and was provided an SCCA Race License but has not actually completed or has minimal actual race experience (w/ other cars in their class).
- Each driver will be individually assessed based on evidence provided to help us make a logical/tangible decision. Examples:
- Recent race results – Ideally showing total time and/or lap time against other competitors in the same class. NOTE: Season points or finishing position is typically not enough
- Proof of experience (i.e. How many races or how many years racing)
- In-car video – NOTE: This may be all we need to see depending on the video angle and footage covered.
Option 3 – Private Method
- This option is for advanced/expert level drivers who are looking to start racing immediately with NASA
- We will provide a private competition school experience custom tailored to each driver
- Prerequisites will be as follows:
- Read the NASA CCRs
- A completed/paid Competition License application submitted
- A Medical application submitted and approved (via doctors exam or self cert option)
- Currently own a race car which has already passed a NASA annual tech
- Unique Race Car # identified and reserved/updated here
