Bondurant West April Recap!
FIR Main Recap
How awesome is NASA AZ?!?! So awesome they can throw a track event at a venue that’s closed! That’s right, despite breaking news the week before the event that the track may be closed until further notice, NASA AZ didn’t hesitate in throwing the first ever NASA AZ event at the new Bondurant West, located conveniently next to Blue Stripe Raceway. While thus far the track and surroundings remain unchanged, it was great to see the management and staff of Bondurant out at the event to ensure everything was up to par. We can only look forward to their future enhancements that can only make each event better.
Race Group
Saturday Big Bore
Coming out of Turn 5 Jeremy Renshaw and Michael Pinholster were gunning for the lead. Diving into turn 8, Renshaw would out break Pinholster and take the overall race lead early. Dan Maloney followed closely with the rest of the pack in tow. After a few laps, Maloney and Pinholster made the pass on Renshaw who was now being followed by Erik Davis. Running consistent 1:04 lap times, Renshaw carried a bit too much speed into turn 8 taking a detour through the dirt to pick back up on the other side of the carousel. As the track and tires heated up, Maloney reeled in Pinholster for the pass, race lead, and the win.

Saturday Small Bore
Saturday afternoon, Eric Dayton flew to a quick lead. Following closely behind was a tightly knit group. Mervin Tan and Doug Evans pushed hard for the second position early in the race. Dayton was living up to his new livery’s reputation and gapping the rest of the pack. Team ArizonaPain.com, Rob Giorgio, and Steven Powers filled the middle of the pack holding each other to mere car lengths of gap. Powers playing follow pushed his away around Giorgio and Team ArizonPain.com keeping his sights on the rest of the field. With half of the race down and warm weather, drivers chopped at the wheel as tires quickly fell off. While putting down some great laps, Team ArizonaPain.com found themselves in the pits with a momentary mechanical issue. In the end, it was Dayton 1st, Team FTW 2nd, and Team LBR 3rd standing on the podium.

Time Trial Saturday
TT-U was an all-day battle between Travis Barnes and Anthony Szirka. With consistent times in the first two sessions from Barnes, Szirka went out and stomped a 1:01.791 in the third session. Barnes just edged him out in the last session with a 1:01.111 for 1st Place TT-U and a new class record. Chris Wilson dominated TT1 for a 1st place finish with a 1:01.471 while Kent Porter going out only in the last session took 2nd place. TT2 welcomed a temporary competitor in Mark Alger who stepped down a class for the day while he mastered the art of instructing. Fast regardless of which Viper he brings from his stable, Alger ran a 1:03.139 for 2nd Place TT2. Taylor Wilson took 1st Place TT2 and a new class record in the second session. Erik Davis took 1st place TT3 by almost a full second. David Schotz was on a record hunt. He fell just short running a 1:04.225 still taking 1st place TTB. Finding time in session 2 Jeff Abrams took 1st place TTC. Never a surprise, Robert Rose ran a 1:06.432 for 1st place TTD. Richard Mazur won TTE by less than a second followed by Paul Bloomberg.

HPDE drivers were having a great time at Bondurant West! With limited incidents testing the knowledge of HPDE driver’s flag knowledge and track etiquette, the day ran smoothly! HPDE4 was especially packed keeping drivers within car lengths of each other. While we all know lapping with friends can be fun, we encourage each of you to make the jump to Time Trial or Race Group and really have a blast!
